Where to begin? All of the trainings I have attended do not recommend any textbooks or resources, since it is based upon truly knowing your students and their mathematical understandings. Yet, you have to start somewhere right? I've observed teachers, searched for a resource to help me get started....and came to the conclusion that I needed to build something to start with.
After analyzing the different types of CGI problems, I decided to focus on the first 3 (Join, Separate, Part-Part-Whole) to start the year. Knowing that my class will have a wide continuum of mathematical skills and proficiency, each problem sheet has 3-4 number options so students can self-select a problem that is "just right" for them.
While I'm excited to start up with CGI, I have mapped out the year to make sure students have plenty of time to also practice their fact fluency and receive explicit instruction in math.
