This summer, I spent some activities to build high frequency word practice during our Word Study portion of reading workshop. First, I found some puzzles at Dollar Tree and wrote the high frequency words on the back of the puzzle. After students solve the puzzle, they write the words down and use them in sentences. I bought 3 sets of the same puzzle so students can share a puzzle, and I would have enough for a rotation of 6 students. I'm hoping a day focussed on high frequency words will build students ability to write them correctly.
I also purchased 24 mini photo albums. Why? I've tried word walls and personal dictionaries, but students seem to like their post its. When trying to spell words, students write down 2 ways they think the word can be spelled on a post it. They can flash these easily to a parent helper or to me, and then we circle the correct word or write it down for them. Students can store these post its in their photo albums. They can also use a dry erase marker and try out their spelling right on the page. Then store the correct spelling in the album. Periodically, we can do an activity with these words, and you won't have to lift a finger to have differentiated, personalized word lists! :)
We will also continue to use Front Row. This spring, they added a Word Study portion to their Reading program. Students can play two Word Study games a day. What I love about Front Row is the fact that activities are individualized just for the student, since they take an assessment when they start using the app.
